ACL Injuries in San Antonio
ACL Injury
What Is the ACL?
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the major ligaments in the knee joint. The ACL connects the femur (thighbone) to the tibia (lower leg bone). This ligament helps stabilize the knee and prevent excessive forward movement of the femur (thighbone) relative to the tibia (shinbone). Additionally, it helps control knee rotation. In sports or activities requiring pivoting or cutting, the ACL plays a critical role in knee stability.
What Is An ACL Injury?
An injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) refers to damage or tearing of the ligament. This injury is relatively common, often occurring during sports activities that involve sudden stops, changes in direction, or jumping.

TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR an ACL Injury
An ACL injury is treated differently depending on the severity of the tear and the individual's lifestyle goals. If your tear is less severe or you don't engage in high-demand physical activities, conservative treatment options may include rest, physical therapy, and bracing. In individuals who wish to resume sports or physically demanding jobs involving cutting, pivoting, or jumping, surgical reconstruction of the ACL is often recommended.
