JOINT INJECTIONS FOR SPECIFIC AREAS OF PAIN

Ortho SA Joint Injection Clinic

The injection clinic here at Ortho SA is specifically designed just for injections, so it helps us fast-track patients that just need those injections. It's normal to have some soreness after the injection and recommended to avoid any strenuous activities two days after the procedure.

the TYPE OF INJECTIONS WE OFFER AT ORTHO SAN ANTONIO ARE Cortisone, PRP, Orthobiologics, AMNIOTIC, & MORE.

Cortisone Injections

As a corticosteroid, cortisone is released by the adrenal gland in response to stress and is a potent anti-inflammatory agent.

Who is a cortisone candidate?

Cortisone injections are recommended for injuries causing pain and inflammation that don't require surgery. An example of such a condition is frozen shoulder.

Cortisone Injection Procedure

The affected joint is injected directly with artificial preparations containing cortisone to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. As a result of cortisone injections, these effects can last for several weeks.

Risks and Complications of Cortisone Injections

Injections of cortisone provide significant pain relief and inflammation relief; however, they are associated with certain adverse effects. The most common side effect is a “cortisone flare”, a condition where cortisone crystallizes and causes severe pain for a brief period that lasts for a day or two. Cortisone flare can be minimized by applying ice to the injected area. Other adverse effects include whitening of the skin and, infection at the injection site, a transient elevation in blood sugar if you are diabetic.

PRP INJECTIONS

What is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma which contains a lot of your body's growth factors that help promote healing and anti-inflammatory. This decreases a lot of pain in your joints or chronic injuries including your tendons and ligaments.

PRP VS. Orthobiologics

PRP and Orthobiologics are both very similar in that they both decrease pain and chronic conditions. The major difference is that Orthobiologics may be a bit more costly and a little bit more painful in obtaining.

AMNIOTIC INJECTIONS

What is an amniotic injection?

Amniotic injections are derived from amniotic fluid, a substance highly concentrated in orthobiologics/stem cells and hyaluronic acid, which helps lubricate joints, ease pain, and restores mobility in the joints. Studies have shown that amniotic fluid is naturally regenerative and can reduce inflammation thus reducing pain and increasing mobility.

The key ingredients in amniotic injections are stem cells used to trigger damaged tissues in the body to repair themselves and hyaluronic acid because it’s similar to a naturally occurring substance that lubricates the joints.

How does it work?

Processed amniotic orthobiologics from your body are injected into the affected area. This process is non-invasive and does not require anesthesia. There is minimal discomfort and the number of injections varies per the condition.

Amniotic injections are a safe and effective treatment with no risk to the patient. Side effects are minimal, i.e. swelling of the injected area.

Who is a perfect candidate?

Patients who are experiencing pain in their knee or shoulder.

What do amniotic injections treat?

  • Joint Pain

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Rotator Cuff Tears

  • Tendinitis

Ramy Noche, M.D., a sports medicine specialist, discusses his favorite success story of a young athlete who had a chronic elbow injury that wasn't healing with therapy alone. After doing a PRP injection in his elbow, he got back to throwing normally and was relieved of any pain. The PRP helped heal his UCL, which had a chronic tear in it.
