elbow Fracture

What is An elbow Fracture?

Elbow fractures occur when one of the three bones in the elbow is broken.

The three types of elbow fractures:

  1. Olecranon fractures: Your elbow's pointy tip (the olecranon) is a part of the ulna, one of the forearm's two bones. Due to its lack of muscles, the olecranon is particularly vulnerable to breakage.

  2. Radial head fractures: The radial head connects with the humerus (the upper arm bone). The most common cause of this type of fracture is trying to break a fall with the arm. This causes the radial head to push into the humerus and fracture it.

  3. Distal humerus fractures: The distal humerus connects the shoulder to the elbow. Trauma or falling onto a bent elbow can result in fractures in this bone.

What are the Most Common Causes of An elbow Fracture?

An elbow fracture can result from a person trying to break their fall or other forceful blow to the elbow. Elbow fractures often occur due to an accident or sports injury.

Treatment for An elbow Fracture

Elbow fractures are often treated with a cast, splint, or sling to support the elbow during its recovery. If inflammation and pain do not subside, prescription or over-the-counter medications are recommended. When necessary, bone pieces may have to return back to their original positions. This can be done manually with out surgery, or it can be done in surgery by using pins, screws, and wires to put the bones in place.
