What Are Bunions?

We asked Dr. Shumaila Sarfani to explain hallux valgus, also known as a bunion.

What Is A Bunion?

Hallux Valgus or the ‘bunion’ is a deformity of the foot that can form over time.

What Are The Causes?

Bunions can be due to:

  • genetics
  • shoe wear

What Happens Over Time?

The deformity occurs depending on the shape of the foot. The first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint can shift over time causing a bend in that first toe, and consequently causes that first toe to be prominent in a way that causes discomfort and pain.

While bunions can be genetic, proper fitting shoes are key to preventing bunions or keeping an existing bunion from getting worse. Some treatment options include bunion pads, pain relievers, and physical theory. In some cases, surgery may be required to alleviate the pain and discomfort.
